A Metamorphosis That Really Matters

I love visiting Susan at Between Naps on the Porch each week to see what each of you has been up to—remodeling rooms, refurbishing furniture, repurposing Goodwill finds. But I’d like to share a different kind of metamorphosis with you—one that is a work in progress. 12135_661948113576_6505835_36936-1

Firstborn son is a mentor and volunteer with Big Brothers of America. Recently he got the opportunity to take his nine year old “little brother” to sit court side at a Grizzlies basketball game. They were treated to first row seats, free food and a visit with the players outside the locker room. Mysteriously every t shirt and souvenir thrown came right their way!

He was treated to a personal visit with the “mouth of the Grizzlies! 12135_661946551706_6505835_36936-2

Here is the little guy with two of the players outside the locker room. 12135_661946571666_6505835_36936-1

This is the ride home—I think he had a good time. Firstborn is the kid who cried for six months with colic…the one whose vice principal had our number on speed dial…the one that keeps us on our toes. Little brother’s t shirt says it all—“We’re in this together”. I think they are making a change for the better in each other….Firstborn is a kid who is making us proud.

  4. Some boys just "have it" for that sort of thing. They coach, they counsel, they are patient, they are there for you. They were my own coaches and my son's coaches, scout leaders, whatever. The boys they touch will remember them forever.

  6. How proud you must be -- once the boyhood youth shakes off it's dirt and the lessons you pounded into their heads is revealed- you see the fruit of your labor.

  14. Kids go through a lot of things and as hard as it is for a parent sometimes you just have to bite your tongue and trust that all will be as it should. Now look! Wonderful!

  20. Susan, I do believe that this is my favorite MM story of all time. It really puts the focus on what is important in life. You have done a great job passing that drive to help on to your son. I know you must be proud. I've always thought that Big Brothers is one of the most worthwhile volunteer organizations out there, and there is no telling what your son is doing for that young man's self esteem. I salute him for taking the time to mentor that sweet little boy. I can't wait to read one day of how that young man is a huge success.

This was a great way to start the week. Thank you for sharing with us. It made me stop and think that I should be doing something more hands on with my own volunteer work and not just sitting on boards.

    XO,

    Sheila :-)

  27. As the mother of a 20 year old son who never did anything really wrong, but resisted doing things right (homework), it somehow always seems to work out so well. I so love watching "our" kids grow up. They are precious and, now he has someone to "watch" grow up. Kudos!
