Not Your Little Black Dress

I have a confession to make. I don’t particularly care for Valentine’s Day. It is, by far, my least favorite holiday. I’ll tell you another secret: I’m not really a “frou frou” kind of girl…more your little black dress and pearls type. I have enjoyed the sparser look after Christmas. But frankly, I couldn’t take another day of this

CIMG1242

So I gave up my title of “the Grinch of Valentine’s Day” and went to Hobby Lobby, Dollar Tree, and “the closet”. I had seen a wreath that I admired in a local florist’s shop. A $79.99 Valentine wreath was more than I could justify..even if I loved the holiday.

CIMG1238

Hobby Lobby offers a ten or fourteen inch styrofoam wreath. Don’t forget to print your 40 % off coupon if they are not on sale.

CIMG1239

Dollar Tree has these right now. There are about seven roses per stem. Remember, you’re not looking for centerpiece quality silk flowers. I had a few stashed in “the closet” from Walmart also.

CIMG1240

I whacked and clipped until I had a pile of red, pink, and white rose buds with about 1 1/2 inch stems. Then the fun began.

CIMG1243

What is this?”, Beloved asked. He knows this is not my normal style.

CIMG1244

I even added a few Valentine picks from Dollar Tree. You might like a bow….I’m already over my “frou frou” limit :).

I am joining Susan at Between Naps on the Porch for Metamorphosis Monday. Each week she shows us inspiring makeover ideas and hosts a long list of participants. Click on the button on my sidebar to join her. Thanks for hosting Susan!

  1. I'm with you...but that is VERY cute...I mean "sophisticated" in a very little black dress and pearls sort of way!

  3. It's very beautiful.
I'm not a huge cupid/heartsy kind of girl either!
    Great job!

  4. I love the wreath :) I don't usually hang a wreath until Spring but I might have to consider something like this. I usually like to do a special meal for my hubby and daughter and set the table pretty, something like this on a smaller scale would make a nice centerpiece too.
    Thanks for sharing.

  5. First - I like your wreath - you did good. I am glad to know I am not the only one in blog land that felt like that! I bought a heart shaped vine wreath at Duffin D., for 80cts. and was going to put some roses on it for V.Day and have done nothing at this point in time.
Are you ready for Winter to return this next week & chance of that white stuff on Fri. ?

  6. Funny, I have never been able to get into "decorating" for Valentine's Day either- except for tablescaping of course! :) I do love the wreath though. Just the right "elegant" touch for your sophisticated entry.

  7. You are just too funny! Congratulations on creating a bit of "Fluff". I love decorating for all the occasions - except St. Patrick's Day is pushing it. I took a couple of years off when I was working full time a few years ago, but now am back into it full swing again. I guess I get bored easy - have to constantly be changing things up.
Great post! I am so glad the Grinch of Valentines Day has been banished to "fluff land". yay!
    HAGD! Karen

  8. Susan, this wreath is gorgeous! Are you in the Valentine mood now? You did such a great job. I love it and I want one.
    Be a sweetie,

  10. Just right for a little nod to the Valentine observers. I, too, don't get all hept (is that a word?) on Valentine's Day. Dear Hubby usually makes a verbal attempt, "so do you want to do anything for Valentine's?" Nope.
Then I put candles on the dinner table with whatever the menu is! Married 38 yrs in June & don't need flowers or chocolates to know: he's the one!

  11. That turned out so nice. I have a nod to valentine's day in the form of a heart shaped wreath with red berries on it. A little fru fru is needed at my house for sure.

  12. Hi Susan! I love your wreath! I have similar feelings about V Day and I like the way yours says Happy Valentines Day without hitting you in the face with it. And...I like the price, too! Happy week!...hugs...Debbie

  19. I looks lovely, and it's simple enough to not be too fru-fru. Now that I'm thinking about it, the Christmas wreath is still on the front door! (We don't usually enter that way.) I'll have to fix that tomorrow...

  24. I made a burlap banner for Valentine's Day and even that was too much for me. BUT, for some reason I love this wreath and I have lots of roses I bought on sale at PB many years ago. It may be tough to find the base here in Vermont. I've tried before...still, I love this wreath!

  25. Oh Sweetie...
I love this wreath, and I believe it is one that even I can't ruin. I have never been very good at arranging flowers or arranging a wreath decoration, but I think I can handle this one. I will be picking up a wreath tomorrow at Michael's and some flowers at the dollar store. I will let you know when I post my finished project. I just thank you so much for sharing this.

It is definitely a project that I think any of us can do. Not to fru-fru and looks so sophisticated.

I have signed up to follow your blog. I can't wait to see what you share next. Have a beautiful Monday sweetie.

  26. Susan, it seems like it's been forever since I visited you. I'm so glad you made a beautiful frou frou valentine wreath for your door before I came to visit! You are so clever to make this beauty so inexpensively. I hope you're going to link this post to my V'tine party on the 12th. laurie

  29. Hello sweet lady...

My friend, I love your new Valentine wreath! Ohhh my goodness, those pink, white, and red roses just look so luscious against your black door! It's very, very pretty!!! You're so creative and talented, Susan! You know, I usually don't decorate for Valentine's Day either, and I do love the holiday but just don't decorate for it! I will do a Valentine's Day tablescape though! Just gotta do a romantic dinner for my honey and me! Hehe!

My friend, I just wanted to come by to thank you for your very sweet note that you left for me on my changing living room post! You really did make my day with your warm and generous compliments...thank you, Darlin'!!!

    Have a marvelous Monday!

    Warmest winter wishes,

  30. I'm with you on the Valentine decorating...although blogging is changing my mind. When I saw you had silk roses, my first thought was a bit of a "yuck" until I saw how gorgeous it turned out. I truly wouldn't have guessed it was going to be that pretty. I actually love it!

  34. I love your wreath, and the fact that it looks way easier to do than one of those fabric circle or fabric square ones. If I hadnt already spent the $5.00 for felt to cover my foam wreath I would do this!

  35. Wow what a savings for your wreath. It's beautiful. Thanks for sharing and Best Wishes

  36. Loved this so much- I went out and bought the supplies TODAY and enlisted my 6 year old daughter's help- thanks for the terrific idea for an inexpensive and easy craft for both of us.
I posted the finished project on my blog-I gave you credit but could not figure out how to make the link clickable. I like the wreath form you used better than the one I used- the flat ones that were left were very thin.

  37. what a beautiful wreath! i need a wreath like this for my front door... we are on a hill and it is so hard to see our door... this one would def stand out!!!
