Pear Bunny Salad

I 'm at an awkward age. I thought I was over those, but it seems once again I'm a "tweener". My children are young adults--too busy to want to decorate sugar cookies with me, too old to dye eggs, and too diet conscious for Easter baskets. I don't have grandchildren, those adorable cherubs that look out me from everyone else's wallets. It seems I'm "between" children, the way some people are between husbands or between jobs. But I do have a three year old niece and several children who refer to me as SuSu--specifically their SuSu. I remembered this salad and made it for my niece who visited this week. It's cute and easy as can be. The body is a canned pear with the smaller end serving as the face. The eyes are raisins and the nose is a cherry. Push whole almonds in for the ears. I used chocolate covered pretzel sticks for the whiskers, but you can use licorice. The fluffy bunny tail is just a squirt of whipped topping. I put it all on frilly green lettuce and added a baby carrot with parsley. They may not eat it, but they will love looking at it! I certainly enjoyed creating it--I don't want to lose my touch. One day I may need these skills again! Click on the Foodie Friday button to visit our hostess Gollum and see what she and every one else has cooked up! Happy, Blessed Easter and Passover to all.

  8. I remember being a "tweener"... Oh for about a minute! Trust me... enjoy it... take time for yourself... Cause when those grand kiddos start coming your whole life changes, for the better, grand kids are incredible! But for now enjoy those quiet times. And remember to be that "fun" grandma that made the pear mice!

    Loved your post!

  11. What a cute salad. I'm a tweener too but I still dye eggs (for myself) It wouldn't be Easter without dyed eggs! We still get DD something for Easter -- just not candy! (this year she got a place setting of her china!)

  13. Hi Susan,

My mom used to do this for me and my brother! I had totally forgotten about this! Has that ever happened to you? You totally forget a childhood memory until you are reminded by a picture or a song or smell. I probably would not have even remembered, if it were not for your post! Thanks so much for bringing back a great memory for me. My mom used to use part of a cherry for the mouses nose too and I would eat that first! I will have to make these for Madison and my foster kids, they will love them!

    Have a wonderful Easter!

  18. Susan, the Pear salads is deligtful!
The grandkids at aour home semed to come all at once in groups of three. Enjoy this time, you could be bombarded...with joy!

You mentioned you wish the recipes were more compatible to printing. All you do is highlight the whole recipe. Pictures and all and then in your word program go to EDIT, then PASTE SPECIAL, then UNFORMATTED TEXT and Paste in your word program and you get the recipe without pictures and so forth. I hope this helps.

I hope you have a wonderful Easter.

  19. Susan that's precious! I hope you and your family have a wonderful and blessed Easter! We've all had the stomach flu here. Yuck! Haven't been that sick in decades! Just now starting to feel like a living, breathing human being again! I know how you feel though...getting my Easter decor out I saw my boys' baskets that I made for them and it brought a little tear to my eye! All they want now is money and maybe a little chocolate! God Bless you today Sweetie! Lauralu :)

  20. Susan:
Thank you so much for the well-wishes, and for hoppin' on over to MLHP! I love the bunny pear salad, and happen to think you're only as old as you feel, so lucky you, Tweener!
    Happy Easter!

  21. Ahhh, how cute is this! I'm a tweener too. My son is 35 & just got married last June, with no grand kids planned for the near future... We have 5 dogs who are our fur babies. They love almost anything that I make but don't care if it's cute or pretty or not. So I'll try to remember the pear bunny for that someday when I might be a grandma! ♥ Diane
