A Metamorphosis and Blue Monday

I've been working on a one week project for three months now. Little things like wedding planning, trips out of town, a bad cold, indecision, and an occasional case of apathy have gotten in the way. But I'm getting close. The end is in sight! So, I couldn't wait to show you just a small part of my transformation. I think it qualifies for Susan's Metamorphosis Monday and for Sally's Blue Monday. I went from this:

Okay, so you got me. I did not transform that ugly blue recliner into this last chair. BUT I made it happen. Beloved brought the recliner home from his mother's house. Ever-hopeful and an optimist at heart, he thought I might let him put it in a guest room so he would have a recliner to call his own. Now we've been married a long time and I know when to bide my time and how to pick my battles. Sweetly, I "allowed" it into the house. A year later, he's never sat in it, has gotten over his need to keep it, and it's "outta here"! I have had this antique recliner sitting in my attic for many years. I used it at one time, but it has just been collecting dust for quite a while. I got it down, dusted it off, and went on a fabric hunt. I knew the exact shade of blue and exactly what I wanted which sometimes makes the search even harder! Five fabric stores, two months, and a great upholsterer later this is what the chair looks like now. I love it! The blue stripes fit into my guest bedroom rennovation perfectly. And yes, that is blue painter's tape you see in the background! I hope by next Monday I can unveil the entire bedroom, but for now head over to Susan's at http://www.betweennapsontheporch.blogspot.com/ for Metamorphosis Monday and give Sally a visit at http://smilingsally.blogspot.com/ for Blue Monday. And,oh yes, be sure to keep your husband off of Craigslist. I gave the recliner to my son and he posted it for sale!

  7. You had me going...I like the cushyness of a recliner but, I've not ever found one that fits the French Country theme.
Your blue and white reminds me of our favorite beach houses piece of furniture.

    Sweet wishes,

  12. Good morning, Thanks for dropping by my blog, yes I'm from Brookhaven. I love that picture of Whitworth.
I really love that new "old" recliner, it is so very charming, so much better than the first one. And the stripped material is just perfect on it. Happy Blue Monday.

  13. Lover your new/old chair. What is it about men and recliners? I had kept one out of the house for years and finally caved in and let LBeau get one for one of the upstairs bedrooms. He's only sat in it occasionally. I really wonder why I gave in.

  18. Ok, you really had me going and I had this plan for an ugly recliner I have at home.
Now I have a game that just popped into my mind concerning things we keep in our houses and don't know why... It's called
You might be an american household if...
... you have an old recliner that you can't get rid of, but don't know why.
This is modeled after the 'redneck' jokes. I love to contemplate the funny things we do for no apparent reason, we just do!lol
    Have a Lovely Day~

  28. Your new chair makeover looks amazing. At first I thought that was under that recliner, I was really to rip my husband's favorite chair apart! LOL Also, thanks for the tip on the Biz product to get the yellow out. I am off to the store to buy some!

  29. OK, I'm lost.
Is the chair at the bottom anything to do with the " ugly recliner" (I'm only calling it that because i have one just like that. We have had it for 40 years, and it was used when we got it)..
I got all excited thinking 'oh someone has some great idea for me to fix this old chair up".

Well, I'm rambling. Your bottom chair looks great.
Wish i could get rid of my old blue recliner, but alas, my guys just love it's comfort. =0/ I am still 'biding' my time. =0)
I'm sure there must be some kind of reward in Heaven for biding so long.

    Blessings,
    Barbara Jean

  36. Now Susan, not only do we share the name, we also share the ability to use our husband's foibles to our advantage at the end of the day! Good for you girl for biding your time. Your transformed antique recliner would look smashing in any room, I love it. Yes, my hub would think the first recliner would be perfectly serviceable if the price was right. Still, these guys are pretty wonderful, are they not? I met mine in the ninth grade, and we are still best friends.

  37. That chair is gorgeous and I so do love Craig's list. in fact I think I'm heading over there right now! LOL, Cindy

  38. Susan,
I laughed on so many levels reading this post. You are one smart cookie and that blue chair was simply a bit fuggly as my dear daughter (an AOII) would say. My sweet Mother- in- law (Alumnae Group Delta, Delta, Delta) my biggest fan would agree. I have not seen the KD’s around lately, but the one’s I have known have exquisite taste and would definitely approve of the new smart, crisp stripe replacement!

  39. Oh my gosh...I could have written this post! LOL

I too have an "ugly" chair that my husband inherited from his mother that she inherited from her mother. How I wish I could say that it had some exquisite value/vintage appeal, but alas, it is some ugly crushed green velvet on a bad 60s frame...it's not even comfortable! I too did the same thing...allowed it to be moved into the house, just biding my time until we can bid adieu!

    Happy Blue Monday,
    Valerie

  41. You sure had me going! My mouth flew open when I saw that second chair. I had some chairs I was going to bring you! That chair is so great, and I can't believe how patient you were to leave it in the attic while you waited for him to get tired of the other one! laurie

  42. You little stinker! I really went back and forth between the first 2 pictures wondering how a frame like that was hiding under the recliner!!

Anyway, it doesn't matter how you got to the end result, the fact is~you repurposed something. I can't wait to see the finished room!

  44. Oh my goodness, that is a GORGEOUS Morris chair that you have! Is it original? If so, you also have quite a treasure there. Well, you have a treasure either way, because it's just plain beautiful, and I love the new fabric on it.

The blue recliner? Not so much. :-)

My husband is making noises about a recliner, too ... I am doing my best at stalling.

    Congrats on a fabulous makeover!

  46. I love the wood and shape of the chair, but the blue striped fabric is the icing on the cake for me. Great job!

  47. Hi Susan... by "original" I meant that it's old and not a reproduction. If you "google" the term Morris chair, you will find out lots of information. And if you look on Ebay you can see that your neat old recliner is worth some bucks! Always nice to know. :-)

  51. Ok now, that's really, really funny! I got rid of my hub's recliner after our first year of marriage, thankfully the cat climbed up inside of it so I convinced him it was a hazard! I love your new chair, it looks like it fits into your decor SO much better.
    Cheers, Andrea
