The bucket was a great condiment container--of course ketchup, the required Louisiana hot sauce, and commercial tartar sauce. Firstborn Son doesn't like my homemade variety (ungrateful thing :) A condiment dish held onions, lemons, and the homemade tartar sauce. The birthday girl's favorite dessert is creme brulee'. Although I might not have chosen it to go with this particular meal, it's my favorite too so I made it! Now, the tablescape is not awe inspiring, but it was fun and easy--my goals for the evening. The food, on the other hand, was down home gourmet! My husband is an expert with the deep fat fryer he got for Christmas. I've included a couple of recipes from the evening. And in case you're wondering, I was listening, but I didn't hear any wedding bells yet --but maybe soon :)
Homemade Tartar Sauce
1 1/2 teaspoons grated carrot, 1/2 mayonnaise, 1 1/2 tablespoons grated onion, 1 tablespoon dill pickle relish or grated dill pickle. Mix all ingredients. This gets better as the ingredients have time to meld.
Mama's Hushpuppies
This is a recipe that was not really a "recipe" until I watched and measured my mother's ingredients one day. Lots of good cooks use "about this much" as a guideline. That is why you will see the words "heaping" and "level". It's as close as I could get to measurements, but it has worked like a charm for many years. l full cup of white corn meal, 2 heaping tablespoons of flour, l level tablespoon baking powder, l teaspoon salt, 3/4 of a medium onion chopped finely, about 1/2-3/4 cup buttermilk, and 1 egg. Mix dry ingredients. Add buttermilk and egg; mix until the batter will drop by spoon (a little thicker than pancake batter). You may need to add a little more buttermilk. Drop by the spoonful into hot oil at 325 degrees. If you get it just right, these will turn on their own! Cook until golden brown.

Hi Susan,
ReplyDeleteSounds like a fantastic, (and truly Southern) meal to me! I think your presentation was perfect -- just right for the occasion and for the menu! The best hosts are relaxed enough to enjoy their own parties.
I love that you buy your flowers from the Kroger sale bin ... that's always the second place I look (first I check to see what's blooming at home!)!
Bill
Everything looks great and the food looks wonderful. Now I want catfish for dinner. :) Any damage from the storm last night? Several low lying areas close to me was under water - so much rain so fast. I had computer power off, but my modem was out when I turned everthing back on, so don't know is lightening thru cable line was responsible or not. Replaced it today.
ReplyDeleteI have the Target fish! This looks like a mouth watering and friendly spread that anyone would love. (I would eat creme brulee with any meal too.) Gee,do you think you may be doing the whole wedding thing in the near future? This is so nice.
ReplyDeleteEverything looks great! You have made me so hungry! Thank you for the wonderful recipes also.
ReplyDeleteOh I think it is perfect and I love the colors. The menu sounds soooooooooo good. I am starving. What a fabulous way to entertain. You were relaxed and this table would make any guest relaxed. That's the best kind of party ever. Hugs, Marty

Susan,
ReplyDeleteI am feeling so hungry looking at your yummy table. It's nearly dinner time here in Australia and I'm cooking lamb shanks with rice.
I love your red and white table, good home cooking and it sounds like your dinner was lots of fun.
xx Coty
With that type of meal and decor everyone I'm sure felt comfortable and right at home! Going to try the hush puppie recipe..it will be a first!
ReplyDeleteIf the bells do ring - hopefully it won't be until next year!! lol
This looks like a wonderfully fun table - bet everyone had a great time and the food looks fabulous!
ReplyDeleteI love fried pickles, too few places to find them anymore!
ReplyDeleteOh...mouth is watering. This looks soooo good. What a nice casual dinner to make everyone feel comfortable and I agree with the choice of dishes!
ReplyDeleteOkay, when should I be there. Everything looks yummy.
ReplyDeleteCynthia
Well, that is surely some Southern Hospitality! And I agree with your choices given the reason for the gathering. What better way to put everyone at ease and to just enjoy company than your momma's hushpuppies!
ReplyDeleteI'm sure everyone had a wonderful time and did you happen to include a little love potion in that bottle of commercial tartar sauce to help get those bells ringing? lol!
Have a wonderful day!
Love, Dana and Daisy
Oh I can just taste it. The red and white check is a classic, isn't it! Those hushpuppies sound divine. You know sometimes nothing but chinet will do!
ReplyDeleteHappy Twirls
Sorry, had to go grab a napkin so I could clean up the drool on my desk. This is one of my favorite all time meals. Don't have it near as often as I'd like any more, but when I do there isn't any leftovers for sure! I did indulge in some fried-green tomatoes the other night though and had the leftovers on a sandwich the next day. Do we Southerners know how to eat or what? Yummy, and I love the way you served it too — just perfect!
ReplyDeleteI've never had fried pickles, or even heard of them until this summer. Might be something I'll have to try some day, lovely tablescape too!
ReplyDeleteOh my, My daughter just got engaged on Fri. night and we are hosting the in-laws this coming Sat.!!!!! I do have the menu prepared (in my head) and am hoping it will be a success!!!!!!!!! I can TASTE all your food itmes, that slaw looks SOOOO good! Thanks again, Pinky
ReplyDeleteHi Susan! Love your tablescape, and the recipes even more! I'm very appreciative of them! I may be a baker, but to this day, I still, most always, need a recipe in front of me to make a meal! (0; By the way, no wedding bells with my daughter and her boyfriend of 4 years yet either, but SOMEDAY I imagine there could be! ~tina

ReplyDeleteOh Susan, I like this kind of tablescape. It's a very relaxed one. And the food sounds so good!...Christine
ReplyDeleteA good old fashioned southern fish fry. It's been a long time since I've been to one. Now I'm homesick!
ReplyDeleteGreat menu and I think your table setting was perfect for the occasion. Definitely liked, and am going to try, your hush puppie recipe. I've actually been looking for a good one....I grew up eating hush puppies, and we love to have them now, but for one reason or the other I've always used a mix. Most of the other things I cook are not from a mix so I've been wondering why I haven't tried making these from scratch. Now I have no excuse cause this looks like a winner!
ReplyDeleteElaine :)
Sometimes it is nice to have a casual meal, isn't it? Your table looks festive and the food looks delicious!
ReplyDeleteDD
Now this is my kind of meal and tablescape! Everything looked delicious! hanks for sharing your Mama's secret hushpuppy recipe. ~ Robyn
ReplyDeleteNever heard of Hushpuppies as a recipie. We only know the Hush Puppies shoes!!!!!. So fun to read about all thos for us so strange foodnames. It sounds like you had a great meal.I can agree with your son on the tartar sauce.Traditional tartar sauce should not have carrots in it but chopped capers.
ReplyDeleteOh! This is so my kind of food & my kinda party too. I only get to taste it when we're in Hilton Head, SC or Dallas, Texas, it must be time for another trip!
ReplyDeleteLover your happy table, and the food looks delicious!

Your menu sounds like the fish fry my sister and sisters-in-law had for Ben and Claire before they got married. A good time was had by all.
ReplyDeleteWhat a relaxed Southern meal for meeting the parents! I love the bucket and the Kroger flowers! The food is great! I been thinking on what to serve in my home for my daughter's new boyfriend. He came once for a crawfish boil outdoors. Now, time for indoors and maybe tomorrow! I best get busy! lol You set a great example of a Southern Relaxing time! I sure you all had a great time with the relaxing setting you have made!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great table, relaxing and fun. I'm sure you made a great impression with your delicious meal and welcoming setting.

ReplyDeleteI should not came back over here! The food! Oh, I am so wanting to jump in! lol
ReplyDeleteI got my husband website link back up. Thank you for telling me.
I love the casual way you hosted your get-together with "her parents"! :) That approach ends up being just as nice and fun as one that required lots of fussing and stress. Way to go. I have those glasses, too. I think they call the pattern a Tartan design (mine came from W-mart). I used to have the pitcher that went with them, but it broke:( That hushpuppy recipe sounded divine! Bet your guests loved every minute with you guys!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the share! Dana
Susan, your table is wonderful. Comfort food is the first thing that comes to mind. How nice of you to have her birthday dinner there. I'm sure the meet 'n greet went well. I'm sure they loved every moment of it. I know I would... Hope you're having a super Sunday..hugs ~lynne~

ReplyDeleteYour table looked fun and I hadn't seen the target fish! They went perfectly with your tablescape.
~♥~
I think it says a lot that he wanted you to host his girlfriend's birthday celebration! He knew you would make it special, and it sure looks like you did. It's past my bedtime, and my mouth is watering for fried food. I love a good hush puppy, and I'll have to try this recipe. (Hope you liked the parents, because it IS starting to sound serious!) laurie
ReplyDeleteOh, BTW, as you can imagine, being the MOG is much easier than be the MOB! I've been both. laurie
