Outdoor Wednesday..Hummingbirds You Won't Believe

I'm glad Susan at A Southern Daydreamer is back and hosting Outdoor Wednesday again! She's been kind enough to host even when her life got crazy! Thank you Susan! I recently received these pictures via email. Ordinarily, I would not post third hand information, but these are extraordinary! Don't worry--cynic that I am about email, I checked this out with snopes.com. They are real and not the product of "photo enhancement".

These pictures were taken by Sam and Abigail Alfano who live in Pine, Louisiana. It seems they live in what is called a "fly zone" for hummingbird migration. According to her, she decided to sit down with a cup of the bird nectar one morning as she was filling it. This is the result!

I've noticed that hummingbirds seem to adapt to people and pets. I am convinced that the same ones visit our house year after year. In fact, I named them long before I named my Target bird couple--Humphrey and Henrietta Hummingbird (I like everything to have a name and am partial to alliteration).

Can you imagine? This is just amazing to me. I'm a little squeamish about birds up close and personal, but I think even I would have tried to sit still for this! Join Susan for a list of participants at http://asoutherndaydreamer.blogspot.com/ and have a wonderful Wednesday!

  1. Hi - thanks for stopping by my blog! I chuckle about your remark concerning birds up front and personal! I am an animal lover of all types, and have trouble understanding someone having trouble with them, especially birds. I own a canary and a lovebird - and my hubby was afraid to hold the canary for a toe nail trim - so much so that he ran from me as I chased him with the bird - he kept saying "It ain't gonna happen! It ain't gonna happen!" In the end, I won, and now he holds birds - even the lovebird which perches on his glasses! I have a pic of that in one of my posts this year! Have a great day!

  2. Oh Susan, thank you so much for sharing. Aren't the hummers just wonderful? I have several, and one of them I have bonded with over the years. She will hover right next to my ear and click away. She tells me when her feeder is low, when the birdbath needs freshened and is just a wonderful pet. I enjoy watching them. They are such a beautiful swirl of colors. Great OW post. I love hummingbirds, we don't see them too often around here,so they are a special treat for the eyes when we do.

  6. Oh, Susan! This is truly the most amazing sight! Can you believe it??? My MIL has hummers, and they seem to return year after year. I think you're right. I think they know where home is. This is the sweetest thing I've ever seen.

Happy OW to you, my friend!

  7. WOW! Those are awesome pictures. I never thought that would ever happen. We have lots of Hummingbirds here too, but they are actually kind of mean. They dive bomb you! It's hilarious to see the dogs run!

  8. I've never had any actually sit on me but they do come close sometimes thinking, perhaps that I'm a flower. If you aren't familiar with Birds n Blooms, a Reinman publication, they have photos like this all the time, sent in by readers.
Thanks for sharing. The Hummingbirds are here in early Spring then we don't see them again until late July. They'll be around now until late Fall.

  10. I think there is something so special about hummingbirds. I have held one in my hand. Amazing feeling. Or non feeling as they have no weight just the vibration.

  19. Hi Susan

Thanks for visiting me on "Outdoor Wednesday" and leaving such a nice comment!

I love hummingbirds but sadly I don't ever see any here. The ones I've seen were at my sister's home in Arizona. They were so tiny and fast!

These photos are amazing! I do think she was brave to let the birds peck at her hands to drink the nectar.

  21. These are incredible photos! I love hummers... When we went camping in Colorado... which is also a "fly zone" we would always bring a hummer feeder to hang in the tree to watch them.... Thank you SO MUCH for posting this... when your page loaded my jaw dropped, literally!
I hope you have a fun rest of the week!

  25. Hummingbirds are just fascinating. I don't know if you've seen the original blog post from this lady and her husband, but the whole story as to how she accomplished this and the aftermath of the emails is just as interesting as the photos. You can read it @ http://www.abigailsings.com/hummingbirds/

I lived in California most of my life and while there are about a dozen species that migrate through, there are three species that live there year round — Anna's, Allen's and Costa's. You do get the same birds everyday and I never tired of watching them. Here in Florida I may catch a glimpse once or twice a year, but that's it.
